Syracuse, Sicily Project
The Syracuse Project was set up in conjunction with a number of Sicilian partners including the Superintendence of the Sea, University of Catania, Associazione Trireme and the Lega Navale (Siracusa). The main aim of this agreement was to explore the area within the Porto Grande where the famous sea battles were fought between the Syracusans and Athenians during the last years of the 5th century BC in the context the Peloponnesian Wars.  In order to achieve a better understanding of the archaeological potential of the seabed around Syracuse it was also determined that a side scan sonar survey would be conducted.
