Syracuse, Sicily 2007 Season

The Project
In order to achieve the abovementioned objectives, the Trust deployed its Klein System 3000 side scan sonar for all side scan work of this project. Inside the harbour, an Edgetech sub bottom profiler was deployed so as to detect anomalies buried in the seabed. All the equipment was deployed from the MV ISIS.

In both survey areas the fish was towed along a series of predetermined lines which ensured the methodical coverage of the entire seabed.  During the inner harbour survey the sub bottom and side scan were towed simultaneously.

Finds
A number of targets were noted on the side scan data. These targets included a number of old anchors, small craft and a large unidentified 20th century shipwreck. Inside the harbour, the anomalies are buried within the first 2 meters of sediment and there are literally hundreds of potential targets in the square kilometre that we surveyed. The area coincides with one of the battles fought in 413 BC in an area close to the Athenian camp.

Future Work
It is envisaged that
Aurora will return to Syracuse in the summer of 2008 to continue the exploratory project started this year.
