Aeolian Island's Project
Two successful seasons in Syracuse persuaded AURORA and the Superintendence of the Sea (on behalf of the Ministry of Culture) to extend their cooperation in the field of underwater archaeology. Following discussions with Dr Sebastiano Tusa, it was agreed that the focus of the new project would be the Aeolian Islands, specifically the island of Panarea (in 2009) where the remains of numerous ancient shipwrecks have been noted. These include the known wrecks of Panarelli (Dressel 1 amphorae), Le Formiche (Dressel 2-4) and that of Dattilo.
